Watering an Orchid Plant

Picture
A single orchid plant is a classic.
Every florist tells you something different...take it from us!
Your orchid is grown in super-absorbent moss and is potted in a plastic container surrounded by floral foam inside the ceramic. The moss and foam hold water for a long time, minimal watering is needed. We recommend 2 tablespoons of water each week over the lava pebbles, at the base of the plant. It's important to keep the roots evenly moist - not wet. You can gently swizzle a pencil or chopstick down through the lava to the roots, pull it out and feel the tip. If it is still moist, no water is necessary.

Light is Critical for Flowers Longevity

Orchid flowers can last up to 3 months in good light.
For longest flower bloom, place your plant in a spot where it will receive brightest indirect light for as long as possible. No direct sunlight, as it burns the plant. Sunlight coming through curtains sheers that stays cool is great, or mini blinds turned so only strips of direct sunlight hit the leaves is OK. Orchid plants bloom longest in bright rooms with lots of good air movement.

After the flowers bloom...

Orchid plants flower annually.
Keep in mind, the orchid plant's flower stalk is temporary. Eventually the flowers will fold, and drop off. Many people think when the flower stalk dies back, it means the plant is dying. Not true! When the flowers drop off, and the flower stalk begins to turn yellow, simply cut it off where it meets the plant with some sharp scissors or clippers. Keep watering according to the directions, and keep the orchid plant in brightest indirect light. We have added time-released feed pellets to each arrangement, so you don't have to worry about feeding your plant for at least a year. In a few months the orchid plant will grow an entirely new flower stalk, and can continue this process for years!
